Kia Soul: Vibrant New Colors, Less Power

Kia Soul lovers should be excited to know that Kia plans to continue the production of this truly unique model, but has announced major changes to the make of the model itself that might be upsetting to some enthusiasts.

The Sad Truth

So, the question is: What is changing in this beloved and quirky Kia model? Well, to say the least, Kia has ultimately decided to downgrade the vehicle’s driving ability by removing the turbo engine from its 2023 lineup. To some who love the thrill of a powerful engine, this is a massive letdown.

It is a bit confusing as to why Kia has decided to make this change, considering in 2021 the model sold over 75,000 units. The Kia Soul, as it is now, is a truly unique vehicle. There are not many turbocharged hatchback models in existence, especially not ones at the lower price point that it is currently at. There is really no other car that offers a turbocharged 200-horsepower I4 and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission…in a hatchback.

Will the Kia Soul be Less Unique?

What is disappointing is that this is what sets the Kia Soul apart from other compact vehicles. Sure, the Soul has a fun and distinguishable design, noticeable anywhere on the road, but it’s what is under the hood that makes it special. The quick-shifting DCT was an added bonus, with a 6.3-6.4 second 0-60 mph time. Not many know just how powerful this vehicle is/was. The 2023 edition will have a GT-line trim, but without a turbo engine will that really make much of a difference?

It’s sad, to say the least. With the stripping of the turbo engine, there are legitimate fears that the Soul will become just another compact hatchback, losing all significance, and one day will be put out of production. However, Kia has made some positive changes, in an attempt to make up for this tragedy. But will it do the Soul justice?

The most noticeable change will be the two new colors that will be available in the 2023 versions of the model. You could say that color has some significance since the Soul has bright and recognizable colors already. The trim will be slightly different as well, but that is to be expected.

Maybe the most important changes to the Soul will be the driver safety features. Even the most basic 2023 trim will come with these features. This includes features like driver attention alert, auto emergency braking, and pedestrian detection. While this is great and all, it seems that most companies are making this kind of technology a normal thing in all newer models of their vehicles. So how is the Kia Soul going to be different?

We Will Just Have to See

With the loss of the turbo engine and the quick-shifting DCT, it is unsure how the Soul will sell when it drops this summer. If you are on the West or East coasts you can visit your local Kia dealer to know more. If you are in the Midwest, consider visiting the Kia dealer Indianapolis.
