It Started With Smart Cars—Now, Hyundai is Moving Toward Smart Cities!

Hyundai is one of the automakers that has reached the peak of car manufacturing—but unlike other companies, they didn’t just stop there. Keeping the idea of convenient mobility and the future of humanity in mind, Hyundai asked this question: what would a human-focused city look like? And then they took a step back from sending conventional cars to Hyundai dealers to make that city into a reality.

With a vision for a human-focused city powered by Hyundai technology and the power to create near-unthinkable mobility and convenience vehicles, here’s what the automaker made:

Hyundai’s Human-First City Focus

First, Hyundai had to establish what the new city would do for its residents. Asking leaders in engineering, urban design, political science, architecture, and psychology, the automaker decided that a city should take care of its people, enable them to grow and move and provide energetic connections between citizens. To match these three ideas, Hyundai made three new mobility-focused creations: the UAM, PBV, and Hub.

Urban Air Mobility (UAM)

Cars, trains, buses, and bicycles have taken up the ground, but what about the air? Through a partnership with Uber Elevate, Hyundai has made affordable on-demand urban air mobility vehicles a reality.

The future of mobility starts with the first Urban Air Mobility (UAM) and the electric Vertical Take-off and Landing (eVTOL) vehicle—the S-A1. It’s designed to make flight an option for everyone while reducing travel time and eliminating gridlock for travelers.

Hyundai Purpose-Built Vehicles (PBV)

Now what about making the most of urban living spaces and ground travel? Called a living space on wheels, the S-Link is a PBV that strives to make mobility seamless for city dwellers. Residents can follow the flow of their days while still living and working—there will be no more need to take the time to plan out a commute that takes away from their daily life.

Hyundai dealers hope that this vehicle will become as iconic and unmistakable as cable cars in major cities like San Francisco.

The Hub

Bringing these new forms of transportation together is the aptly-named Hub. It provides a link between the air-based UAM and ground-based PBV while also serving as a gathering space for residents. The Hub is able to change form and function based on the needs of whoever enters it so that
connection and community can thrive in the city.

The Hyundai-Powered City of the Future Can Be Today’s Reality

These three creations will completely revolutionize the way towns are constructed and how communities flourish. The S-Link already has a concept model, and the S-A1 could be ready to fly at Hyundai dealer locations at any time.

The human-focused future that Hyundai envisioned can become a reality soon—it’s all part of Hyundai’s mission to make progress for humanity.
