With Great Power Comes Higher Costs

Most drivers remember when the Hummer first hit the road. From 1992 to 2006, every GMC dealer under the GM umbrella bragged about this vehicle’s performance capability, unique
style, and impressive size. Sadly, the Hummer didn’t have a long lifespan, mainly due to its massive fuel requirements, and this gas guzzler ended production after just over a decade.

Of course, your local GMC Dealer is currently touting the new Hummer EV. This new electric SUV maintains the Hummer’s legacy for power, speed, and style with the added bonus of being
fully electric. Its comeback has been marked by incredible sales and a backlog of pre-orders that will keep people in Hummer EVs for years to come.

The Hummer doesn’t just maintain its reputation for its abilities on and off-road; it also keeps the legacy of requiring a lot of power. In fact, the Hummer’s 200+ kWh battery pack is more
than three times larger than the average EV battery. Just like a vehicle with a larger gas tank costs more to fill up at the pump, a larger battery will cost more at the plug.

Ways to Charge

EV owners know that they only have a few options to keep their electric vehicles charged. Commercial charging stations are popping up around the country. They are easy to use and becoming more convenient for drivers. These DC fast charging systems are quick, so an “empty” Hummer only takes about 2.5 hours to reach its maximum charge. Based on estimates through an Electrify America charger, the Hummer costs about $100 to fully charge. Of course, there may be ways to lower that price through different membership options.

Charging a Hummer at home is a different story. Those who bring home one of these beasts from their favorite GMC dealer should plan on adding a Level 2 home EV charger and using it as much as possible. Charing 200+ kWh should only cost about $16.00 when charged at home, depending on your utility prices, etc. While a home charger might set you back a few thousand dollars, especially if upgrades to your electrical system or service panel are required, it’s a worthwhile investment to keep your Hummer at full power. When you’re already going to spend ~$100,000 for an EV, what’s a little bit more to lower your electricity costs and add convenience to your life?

Totally Worth It

The current version of the Hummer EV for sale at your local GMC dealer comes with three electric motors that produce upwards of 1,000 horsepower. The standard all-wheel-drive
powertrain can launch the Hummer from zero to 60 mph in just 3.3 seconds. When fully charged, the Ultrium battery gives you around 329 miles of electric driving range.

Altogether, the new Hummer EV is like nothing to hit the road before. It still requires quite a bit of power to keep it running, but that shouldn’t stop those who crave its performance from bringing one home. Stop by your local GMC dealer to learn more about how to make one of these sweet rides yours.
