Are robots capable of solving the population problem in Japan? The situation in this country is the opposite of many other Asian nations.

While we see India and China as overpopulated areas with nearly one billion people in each of those countries, Japan has been in a population decline for more than a decade. Add the fact that the labor force has grown older, and you have a serious problem getting things done and continuing to thrive as a nation. With fewer people in the country than before, you might think there would be less to do, but that’s not the case at all. The problem facing the current workforce in Japan is that fewer people must now perform more tasks than before. This country is facing serious problems with many men working longer hours than their parents and showing a reluctance to marry and women who are choosing to marry later also working long hours, and some that choose not to marry at all. Many of these young adults are also showing a reluctance to have as many children as their parents, which results in a declining population. The government is hoping this example will become a model for how these robots can be used in other areas of the country.

Thinking of the same machines that stamp out parts in a factory as the ones that care for your elderly grandmother might be a jarring and scary thought. Thankfully, the robots being used to care for the elderly are created to be friendlier and look much more like Baymax from Big Hero 6, which was a robot made to offer care and healing to the characters of the story. In Japan, robots that are programmed to care for the elderly are viewed as positive, friendly, and a way for these citizens to receive the care they need without stressing out the workforce further.
