The Top Ten Held Serve, But Some Teams Moved
You might think that if every team in the top ten of college football were to win their respective games, no movement would take place.
That certainly wasn’t the case, as some of these teams found their way down the rankings with a bit of a shakeup of the rankings. Let’s take a look at how each of these teams performed in Week 3 and how they rank going into Week 4.
Alabama Continues to Roll
The chant of “Roll Tide” was strong and loud as Alabama went into the swamp in Gainesville, FL, to play the Florida Gators. The early score appeared that the Crimson Tide were going to run away with the game, but the Gators came back and had a chance to tie the game near the end. With a missed two-point try, Alabama survived a tough SEC opponent 31-29 and held onto their top spot in the AP Poll.
Georgia Takes Care of South Carolina with Ease
The South Carolina Gamecocks are not the strong and tough team they were a few years ago, and Georgia was expected to topple them easily. The final score of 40-13 shows that the Bulldogs came in and took care of business without much of a challenge at all. This win allows Georgia to hold onto the No. 2 spot in the top ten.
Oregon Moves Up to Third
It seems that Oregon is continuing to ride the wave of the big win over Ohio State, and with a monster score of 48-7 over Stony Brook, the Ducks move up from fourth on this list to third. Whether that was because of an unimpressive performance by Oklahoma or the dominant fashion that Oregon is playing doesn’t matter; what does is that the Ducks sit in the third spot right now.
Oklahoma Falls One Spot, Even with a Win
If we were to go back to the 1970s and 1980s and give you a Nebraska vs. Oklahoma game, it would be the biggest game on the schedule for that week. Unfortunately, Nebraska isn’t what it used to be, and a 23-16 win isn’t impressive enough to keep the Sooners in their third spot. Oklahoma drops from third to fourth in the top ten this week.
Iowa Holds the Fifth Spot With a Huge Win
The game was never in doubt, and as expected, the Iowa Hawkeyes whipped Kent State 30-7 over the weekend. This was a strong enough score to keep Iowa where they were on the list. Right now, the Hawkeyes hold onto their fifth position and look to continue a run to hopefully be the representative for the Big Ten when it’s time to be considered for the playoffs.
Penn State Moves Up Four Positions
The “White Out” was insane, loud, and raucous in Happy Valley as the Auburn Tigers came to town to take on the Penn State Nittany Lions. This was a matchup of No. 10 vs. No. 22 and Penn State came out victorious with a 28-20 win. Not only was this a ranked matchup it was also a game with the Big Ten taking on the SEC. With this win, Penn State moved up four spots to sixth in the top ten.
Texas A&M Rolls Through New Mexico
The seventh spot in the rankings continues to be occupied by the Aggies as they took on New Mexico and pitched a shutout with a 34-0 win. There should never have been a question about how this game was going to go, and that was certainly the case. The Texas A&M Aggies continue to be in the seventh position for another week.
Cincinnati Handled Indiana to Secure the Eighth Position
Indiana has been getting tougher each year and just might become a football stronghold as they recruit better and build their program. Even so, the Hoosiers were no match for the Cincinnati Bearcats over the weekend. The final score came in a 38-24 with the Bearcats the victors, which securely keeps them in the eighth spot in the top ten.
Clemson Drops Three Places
No one expected Georgia Tech to be a challenge for Clemson at all, but they were. The Yellowjackets were never meant to give the Tigers a tough game, but the 14-8 score would tell a different story. Clemson drops three places in the rankings to ninth after this terrible game and could likely be out of the top ten before long if they don’t figure out how to win big over lesser ACC opponents.
Ohio State Also Drops a Spot
Whether they are still reeling from the loss to Oregon or the fact that the Ohio State defense allowed Tulsa to score 20 points, the Buckeyes are just barely hanging on to that tenth spot right now. Will they shore up their game and win the Big Ten again this year, or is it time for another team to be the Big Ten Champion? The final score against Tulsa was 41-20, but that wasn’t enough to not fall a little bit.
