Charleston’s Charms
Deep in low country of South Carolina lies a city that will take you back in time. In other parts of the south, where the past is on its way to being forgotten, this city embraces the old deep south and cherishes those roots dearly. Travel down cobblestone streets, listen to the rhythmic cadence of the language of some locals, and embrace the history surrounding you.
From horse-drawn carriages to old southern architecture, the city of Charleston offers you a trip back in time. Feel the incredible heat of the air on your face, feast on shellfish that were pulled from the ocean only hours before, and allow the charm of Charleston to take your cares away. Breathe in the salty air, as you take in everything the city has to offer.
Things to Do
1. Charleston City Market –Want to check out two things at one time? Well here is where you can do just that with a smorgasbord of local food laid out before you as you take in all the talent of the local artists who’ve weaved baskets, made jewelry, and shot beautiful photos. No trip to Charleston would be complete without a visit to this market.
2. Waterfront Park –Ever wonder why pineapples are so prevalent in southern art? Well in the Waterfront Park in Charleston you’ll find out as you take in the famous fountain; a giant pineapple spewing water. The park is also a perfect place for you to simply relax and take in the scenery around you. Watch the water or do a little people watching, but allow yourself to be entranced into the southern state of mind, where there is no rush to do much of anything.
3. Architecture –You should definitely check out all of the pastel-painted homes on Charleston’s famous Rainbow Row. You’ve never seen a pink house look this good. For an immediate contrast from the painted beauties on East Bay Street, make your way to East Battery Street where you can see some of the most beautiful southern mansions that Charleston has to offer. This street is full of history, so consider the option of taking a horse-drawn carriage tour.
4. Munch, Chow, Grub –From Slightly North of Broad to Christophe to Hot Little Biscuit to Halls Chophouse, Charleston is packed with great places to eat. Try your luck with shrimp and grits, fresh chocolate and pastries, hot fresh biscuits, and an incredible steak or keep things simple and duck into the local seafood joints that promise the freshest seafood you’ve ever had. Either way, you may want to get some walking time in, because you’re going to want to eat your way through this city.
5. The Beaches–Make your way to Sullivan’s Island or Isle of Palms and clock some serious beach time. White sand beaches, deep blue sea, and that charming Carolina blue sky. Pack some local sweet tea in a thermos, grab a book by local authors, and plant yourself in a chair in the surf line. Sit, breathe in the salty sea air, and let the legs of your chair be buried by the incoming tide.
Charlestown is a modern city with old town feel. There are incredible flora and fauna, the constant smell of the sea hanging heavy in the humidity, and the gentle clip-clop of horses’ hooves in the cobblestone streets. Once you’re here, you may never want to leave.
