Known to draw tourists –even from the North –to its distilleries, this trail of stops keeps fans of the dark liquor coming in droves to sample the whiskey wares of the south.

The Top Stops

1.Evan Williams –No bourbon lovers dreams would be complete without a visit to the Evan Williams distillery. Located in downtown Louisville, Kentucky, this is known to be one of the first commercial bourbon brewing companies in the country. It’s located across from where the first original distillery was located back in the late 1700s. Fans of the drink can enjoy a fully functional tour where you’ll learn about the history of distilling bourbon, but you’ll also get to see it being made, as well. You’ll experience a comprehensive tasting and finish your tour in the gift shop where you’ll be able to purchase the full line of Evan Williams products.

2. Jim Beam –Dating back seven generations, the Jim Beam line is considered one of the first families of Kentucky. Hit up the American Stillhouse in Clermont where the first bottle of Beam came off the line. Here you’ll learn all of the ins and outs of making each bottle of Jim Beam Bourbon from start to finish. You’ll also get to sample a little of the rich brown liquor while you’re learning.

If something different suits your fancy, you could take a cocktail class at the Urban Stillhouse in Louisville. This tour gets a bit more hands-on as guests are invited to view a smaller version of what happens in Clermont and then asked to bottle their own bourbon. Simply go to take a taste or really get into the experience with some interactive fun.

3. Maker’s Mark –Famously exclusive with their red wax dripped bottle, Maker’s Mark is one of the finest in the bourbon game. This hour-long tour includes samples and the chance to hand dip your own bottle of the famous drink. Photography is encouraged as the distillery itself sits on a beautiful parcel of land in Loretto, Kentucky.

In their well-stocked gift shop, you’ll find their complete line of products and plenty of swag to let people know you’ve been to the bourbon-based holy land. Grab a bite of delectable dishes at the Star Hill Provisions restaurant, which is located in what used to be the distiller’s house.
