Why Are So Many People Dressing Like It’s 2003 Again?
Are people dressing like it’s 2003, or is the Y2K fashion simply timeless enough to continue to be enjoyed more than twenty years later?
You wouldn’t have looked at 1960s fashion in the 1980s and thought it was the same, and the same goes for the early 2000s fashion compared to the 1980s. Strangely, the fashion trends of twenty years ago have continued to be part of the mix into the current decade. This could be simply because the Y2K fashion items are timeless and universally acceptable.
Here are a few of these fashion trends that have continued to be popular even twenty years later.
Graphic Tees
Graphic tees continue to be popular and acceptable as fashion items. You see celebrities wear them out for dinner or to events, which makes them more acceptable for the rest of us. Besides, who doesn’t love a comfortable t-shirt and one with some of your favorite characters, scenes, or slogans make for some of the best to wear? In addition to graphic tees continuing to be acceptable, Ed Hardy tees are coming back, which means it’s time to bring them back out of the closet.
Micro Miniskirts
The shorter the skirt, the better. It seems the fear over computer shutdowns at the beginning of the century caused skirts to have much less fabric than before. One of the most popular Y2K fashion trends is a short miniskirt that has become even shorter to be called a micro miniskirt. Sometimes these skirts are balanced with an oversized top to make them look even shorter and wearer’s legs to look longer. This is a fun and attractive fashion trend that many young women enjoy.
Vests
The first decade of this century brought out the vest vibe, and it continues to today. For some celebrities, this meant showing off more of their skin by wearing the vest over a bra with the vest open, but a vest can be worn over a tee shirt as well. Some might wear the vest over a crop top to show the hint of a midriff without outright showing it off. Vests have been around for a long time, and more recent versions include shorter vests that don’t cover below a crop top.
Platform Shoes
The Y2K fashion trend that took shoes to a new level wasn’t the same platform shoes that you might remember from previous decades. Some of those shoes, with their extremely chunky and tall soles, were considered elevator shoes more than platform models. The early 2000s brought huge, chunky heels that extended to the toes, giving the wearer a bit of a lift above the ground. These shoes have continued to be some of the most popular choices for women to wear and enjoy.
Bucket Hats
For most people, bucket hats might not be the fashion trend they want to embrace, but these hats have a place in the world and have become popular to wear with many outfits. Once only thought of as a good choice when fishing, these hats are part of the fashion movement that’s been going strong since the beginning of the century. These hats can allow an outfit to feel much more casual than it might otherwise, adding a fun touch to any suit or evening dress.
Low Rise Jeans
How low can you go? No, you’re not playing the game of Limbo, but wearing jeans that might require a visit to your local intimate waxing salon. Low rise jeans have been around and worn by celebrities for many years and are part of one of the most recognizable Y2K fashion trends. Many of these jeans can be worn with a skinny belt, are tight around the waist and upper legs and then bellow out near the bottom, to look almost like bell-bottom jeans from the 1970s.
Crop Tops
A top that covers little more than what a bra will cover is a popular choice among young women. These crop tops can be form fitting around the upper chest and back and is the foundational fashion item for many outfits. Many women begin with the crop top and add items like a blazer, belt, skirt, and pants to the mix, giving the overall sexy and stylish look they want to show off when they go out for a night on the town.
What are some of the most popular Y2K fashion trends that you remember and still embrace? Are you ready to wear the same items you wore 20 years ago, or do you still?
