These Ten Outfits Stunned at the Met Gala
Every year, the Met Gala fundraiser is hosted at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. But it isn’t just an opportunity to raise money for the museum.
It’s also a congregation of the current biggest names in pop culture, and a chance for them to show off their unique style as they adhere to (or, as is more common, choose to ignore) the event’s fashion theme. Below are ten of the best outfits from this year’s Met Gala.
1.) Amanda Gorman’s Dress
The young poet rose to prominence after she performed her work at this year’s Presidential Inauguration, as well as at Super Bowl LV. Amanda Gorman was a co-host of the Met Gala, and her outfit did not disappoint. She wore a beautiful blue dress, speckled with gold flecks, and matching blue stilettos. Her delicate gold hair pieces, long braid, and intricate makeup completed her outfit.
2.) Emily Blunt’s Outfit
Emily Blunt’s Met Gala outfit was composed of three main pieces that really made her fashion style stand out. First was her dress, a combination of thin threads of fabric, and sparkling, clear crystals. On top of the dress, the A Quiet Place actress donned a white cape. Last, but certainly not least, was a celestial headpiece, with shining stars, pearls, and diamonds.
3.) Lili Reinhart’s Dress
Although Riverdale, on which Lili Reinhart stars, has many dark themes, Lili’s dress was the exact opposite. A beautiful light pink, the dress was covered in colorful flowers that cascaded down from Lili’s left shoulder to her legs, and eventually pooled behind her feet. Lili’s light and airy dress also fit very well with this year’s theme, which was about celebrating America, because each of the 50 states’ state flower was represented.
4.) Billie Eilish’s Dress
Billie Eilish is typically known for her streaks of brightly colored hair and baggy clothes, so she surprised everyone when she showed up to the Met Gala with blonde hair, and wearing a long, flowing, peach-colored dress. The tail end of the dress stretched out many feet behind her, and reminded many viewers of Marilyn Monroe.
5.) Michaela Coel’s One-Piece
Michaela Coel has drawn many eyes since she began starring in I May Destroy You, and her outfit at the Met Gala did just the same. While many female attendees opted for extravagant dresses, Michaela donned a V-necked, sequined, sparkly blue jumpsuit. The outfit even encompassed her shoes, in the same sequined color that helped her stand out from the crowd.
6.) Sunisa Lee’s Two-Piece
After her performance this summer at the Tokyo Olympics, it seems appropriate that Sunisa Lee, who won a gold medal in all-around gymnastics, would be wearing a gold outfit to the Met Gala. The top part of her two-piece resembled the clothing of a warrior, with a beaded neckline and shoulders. The other part of the outfit was a flowing gold skirt, and Sunisa Lee’s matching gold shoes and high ponytail completed her look.
7.) Normani’s Dress
Normani, a founding member of the girl group Fifth Harmony who is now finding success as an individual artist, arrived at the Met Gala in a dark yellow ball gown. Huge, puffed sleeves drew viewers’ eyes immediately, as did the ballooning skirt below the cinched waist, and her large blue necklace.
8.) Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s Outfit
The 2021 Met Gala was the NBA player’s first fashion event, and he made sure to pick a great outfit for the occasion. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s outfit included white shoes, light pink pants, and a gray turtleneck sweater. Over the sweater was a rose gold, pink, and silver jacket with intricate floral designs. With this outfit, Shai showed why he should continue to be invited to the Met Gala every year.
9.) Kim Kardashian’s Outfit
Kim Kardashian, along with the rest of her family, is used to having all eyes on her, so having her outfit make this list is no surprise. However, instead of bright colors, a beautiful design, or an interesting pattern, Kim stunned viewers for another reason- she was dressed in an all-black bodysuit, which had two tail pieces of fabric flowing out behind her, that completely concealed all parts of her- even her face. Kim later revealed that she had a lot of trouble seeing and breathing in the outfit.
10.) Hailee Steinfeld’s Dress
Hailee Steinfeld, like Billie Eilish, was another big surprise, with some fans saying they barely recognized the singer and actress in her Met Gala dress, and with her new blonde hair. Hailee’s dress was stunningly beautiful and intricate, with leaf-like pieces of the dress swirling up from her leg and down from her shoulder until they met in the middle of her body, forming a backwards “S” shape across her figure. Hailee’s snowflake-like dress was a gorgeous surprise for viewers.
Each year, the Met Gala is a chance for celebrities to put their fashion styles on display, and these ten outfits did just that.
