GeoGuessr, an online game that uses Google Maps’ street-view data, allows players to explore the world from the comfort of their homes.
While the most commonly played map is made up of locations from all around the planet, there are other, more specific maps that offer a unique, creative way to play GeoGuessr. Whether they are focusing on a specific country, a fun location that is popular around the world, or expanding the scope that is traditionally covered on GeoGuessr maps, these maps are worth a play.
1.) “Where’s that Mcdonald’s?”
This map is unique because, in each of its 47 locations, the player is dropped in front of a different McDonald’s restaurant around the world. It’s fascinating to see the different climates, languages, architectural styles, and global cultures that have influenced the buildings. Some McDonald’s are fancy, with outdoor seating and awnings, while others are the traditional drive-thrus that are popular in the United States. Playing this map shows players that even McDonald’s locations vary around the world.
2.) “The 198 Capitals of the World”
Although Google Maps’ street-view covers a large part of the world, it isn’t present in every country. However, there are some “photospheres” in every country, which are panoramic scenes often taken by individual tourists or locals that don’t allow the viewer to move around. This map combines photospheres and street-view to give players a chance to land in every single global capital city. This map is fun not only because it lets users visit capital cities, but it provides the chance to see a new country that isn’t usually featured on GeoGuessr, such as Chad, Namibia, Uzbekistan, or El Salvador.
3.) “Interesting Photospheres in Obscure Countries”
Like “The 198 Capitals of the World,” this map broadens the scope of the world that is covered by traditional GeoGuessr. All one thousand of the locations are photospheres that were taken in countries with no street-view coverage. So all the scenes will be brand-new to players, and even the most experienced GeoGuessr players will be challenged. Additionally, all these photospheres are beautiful and fascinating. They may be natural scenes of mountains and bodies of water, things like abandoned shipwrecks, aerial views of little-known cities, and more. It’s the perfect map for those looking for an off-the-beaten-path location.
4.) “An Urban World”
There are some beautiful rural locations in the world, but let’s be honest- trying to figure out where you are when all you are looking at is a dirt road and some grass can be frustrating and difficult. “An Urban World” solves this problem by providing over two thousand urban locations around the world, found throughout six hundred cities. It’s a little easier than some of the other global maps, but can also be difficult if, for example, you are dropped in a smaller Russian city. Players use their knowledge of culture, climate, language, and architecture to investigate which city they are in.
5.) “Dumb test”
Now, don’t be thrown off by the semi-offensive name; this GeoGuessr map uses world-famous locations and scenes to give players the best chance at a good score. Locations like the Statue of Liberty, the Hollywood Sign, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and the Burj Khalifa in downtown Dubai give the map its ranking of “very easy.” Whether you’re a beginner to GeoGuessr just starting to learn the ropes, or an expert who wants a bit of an easy game, the “Dumb test” is always a lot of fun.
GeoGuessr is a fun, engaging game that involves geography, technology, and investigative skills. Playing on the traditional “World” map is fun, but so is trying out some player-made maps with unique topics and themes. Next time you play, check out one of these maps for an interesting, unique experience.
