Heading into the third week of NCAA Football, we see a few teams have dropped from where they were in the top ten and others are moving up.
This second week of the season saw many teams playing much lesser opponents that didn’t challenge them while others were pitted against other top teams. As the season continues, we’re likely to see everything level off in college football.
Alabama Rolls The Way They Should
If you’re getting tired of Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide and their dominance in college football, you’re going to hate that this team appears to be ready to hoist another national championship trophy. This may only come into question when they begin their SEC season, but the 48-14 win over Mercer in the second week was just another feather in the cap for this team.
Georgia Secures its Place in the Second Spot
The greatest challenger to that top spot in these rankings might only come from Georgia. The Bulldogs rolled to a 56-7 victory over UAB, as expected. Kirby Smart and his team are looking strong this year and just might be built to take on the Crimson Tide and give them a game. We may be looking at an All-SEC championship game in the making.
Oklahoma Moves Up One Position
Maybe we should say that Ohio State dropped out of the top three since Oklahoma secured a 76-0 victory over Western Carolina, which was no match for the Sooners. With a dynamic offense and tons of creativity from the coaching staff, the Sooners just might be ready to make a push for the playoffs once again. We will have to see how they handle the rest of the season to be sure.
Oregon Moves into the Fourth Position
Previously ranked 12, the Oregon Ducks took on the Ohio State Buckeyes and came away with a 35-28 victory. This was a huge upset and dropped the Buckeyes cleanly out of the playoff picture for right now. Will the Ducks be the only team to give us a different color scheme when taking the field during the playoffs this year? With a weak PAC-12, it certainly looks like the Ducks are the top team coming out of this conference.
We See the Iowa Hawkeyes Make a Huge Leap
Moving up five spots from ten to five, the Hawkeyes are sitting just outside of the playoff picture with a clear chance to get in if they continue to run the table in the Big 10. Their win over previously number 9 Iowa State that saw the final score of 27-17 was one of the best games of the NCAA football season and certainly what vaulted them upward.
Clemson Didn’t Move from Sixth
The Clemson Tigers held onto their sixth position while being leapfrogged by the Oregon Ducks and Iowa Hawkeyes. The reason for this, the Tigers played South Carolina State to a 49-3 victory which was an expected result. Until Clemson plays another quality opponent, don’t expect them to move up in the rankings. We might see a season when this team doesn’t make it to the playoffs.
Texas A&M Drops Two Spots
The Texas A&M Aggies won their game this weekend, so why did they fall from fifth to seventh in the rankings. The team they played was the Colorado Buffalos that took this team to a 10-7 final that wasn’t convincing at all. Teams in the top ten that play unranked opponents need to win big or expect to fall, which is exactly what happened here.
Cincinnati Fell One Spot Surprisingly
To make room for Iowa and Oregon, someone had to fall and even though the Cincinnati Bearcats beat Murray State 42-7, they lost one position and fell to eighth on this list. While this drop doesn’t make a lot of sense, there isn’t a strong argument for putting the Bearcats ahead of any of the other teams ahead of them. As the NCAA football season continues we will see where this team ends up.
Ohio State Falls to Nine
The biggest upset of the weekend was dealt to the Ohio State Buckeyes. Facing the Oregon Ducks, the Buckeyes came away from this game with a loss that only had a touchdown differential in the score. That was enough to drop them from third to ninth. Will this team make it back into playoff contention during this NCAA football season? We will see as the season moves on.
Penn State Moves into the Tenth Spot
A convincing victory over Ball State and a not-so-convincing win for Notre Dame made it possible for the Penn State Nittany Lions to move into the tenth spot on this list. The final score over Ball State was 44-13, which was more than enough to secure the victory. Of course, Iowa State also had to move out of the top ten as well, which gave more space for this team to find its way into this group.
