Is it Time to Give Up On Your New Year’s Resolutions

Did you make some New Year’s Resolutions when the calendar turned to January 1, 2021? Have you already found that you’re losing motivation?

There are many questions you need to ask yourself and items to consider before you completely give up on the resolutions you made. Let’s take a look at what you should do and how to make the correct changes in your life.

Why do We Make These Resolutions?

We look at the changing of the calendar to a new year as a new beginning and a time to change. So many of us make blanket resolutions and might stick with them for a week or two, but often lose sight of what we wanted to improve. These changes represent improvements we want to make in our lives or old activities we want to engage in and enjoy.

Why is Failure So Much a Part of the New Year’s Resolutions?

We resolve to change our lives every year, but if you look back, it’s likely that you’ve not changed much at all. If you did make a resolution that you kept, you’re way ahead of most of the world. There are many reasons these changes don’t stick. Unfortunately, it doesn’t take much for you to realize that you’ve not kept your promise to yourself to make changes to your life.

Look at Why You’re Failing

What’s making you fail at improving your life? Do you want to lose weight, save more money, travel more, participate in more activities, spend more time with family and friends? Any of these could be hard to do if you fall back into your regular routine. You need help and guidance to make sure you can keep your resolutions going forward.

Have you created goals that are too lofty? Are you giving up too easily? Do you need the support of others? Did you create a time management plan for keeping your New Year’s Resolutions? Did you make too many resolutions? Are you being dishonest with yourself? Do you lack the confidence to continue forward? If any of these is true, it’s pretty easy to see why you have failed to keep your resolutions, even though we’re only a few weeks into the year.

Start Small and Work from There

No matter the resolutions you made when the calendar changed, it’s time to take a harder look at them and figure out what you need to do. If you made several promises to yourself to improve your life, make a list and prioritize that list so that you know which one is the most important to you. Narrow your list down to this one resolution and work to make that improvement. This will give you one thing to focus on all year as a way to improve. The rest of your life can continue on the way it has already.

Dice Up Your New Resolution

Once you find the single one of the New Year’s Resolutions that you’re going to work on for 2021, you need to break it down into pieces that you can easily work with. The old saying of “you can only eat an elephant one bite at a time” applies here. If you have a goal for the entire year, break it down into monthly pieces and then break those down into weekly items. This will help you create more achievable goals that you can enjoy every week and know that you can accomplish. Don’t look at the entire goal, that will be where you are at the end of the year.

Don’t Be Too Hard on Yourself

There will be weeks you don’t accomplish your weekly goal. There might be a month where you have a hard time staying on track. Don’t cause yourself too much stress. Move forward by leaving those weekly goals behind and working toward your overall resolution. Adjust the bigger goal and give yourself a break when you fall down a bit.

Get Restarted with Only One of Your New Year’s Resolutions

Forget your list of changes you want to make in your life, forget what you said you would do when the calendar changed, and find that one, all-important change that you’re going to make. This will help you have the focus you need. Create smaller goals from the larger one and figure out how to achieve them every day, week, and month so that at the end of the year, you’ll have kept your resolution all year long.
