Outer Banks Television Show Review You'll Love

One of the most popular shows streaming right now is the television show, Outer Banks.  Take a look at what this show has to offer for your entertainment.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and others flourished because of the increase in demand. Most people were stuck at home and many had lost work or had their hours reduced, and TV shows and movies provided a welcome distraction from the worries and stresses of the world.

Many turned to beloved classics such as The Office and Friends, while others turned to new shows. Some looked for suspenseful, action-packed dramas, and some preferred a little comic relief. Nevertheless, one of the most popular shows during the quarantine, especially among viewers in their teens and twenties, was a Netflix original called Outer Banks.

The series follows four teenagers who live in the North Carolina islands: John B, JJ, Pope, and Kiara. John’s father has been missing for months, and the four’s lives are upended when their routine summer is disrupted by clues concerning a treasure hunt that is decades old. Elements of romance and a more serious side concerning addiction and how the rich keep getting richer punctuate the adventure, so let’s take a look at what makes the show so appealing.

The Setting of Outer Banks

Even those who have never seen the show know the setting; after all, it is the title. Thousands of tourists flock to the Outer Banks every year, craving the isolation it provides and a unique beach vacation experience. Outer Banks showcases the beauty of the islands through the four teens’ adventures.

However, the show also highlights an area of the location that isn’t often shown; an area away from the luxurious vacation houses. John B, JJ, and Pope aren’t members of the wealthy elite on the island and are commonly referred to as “Pogues”, which is the nickname for those who aren’t as rich as the “Kooks”. Outer Banksrelies less on the mansions and beach homes that so often come to mind when thinking of the region, and prefers to focus on the natural beauty of the woods and marsh.

But of course, there are scenes taking place at incredible homes, beautiful abandoned lighthouses, and cute coastal towns. The beautiful setting of the show draws in many viewers and sets the show apart from others.

A Unique Premise

Treasure hunting has long been a plot for books, movies, and TV shows (does The Gooniesring a bell?), but Outer Banks puts a new spin on it. John B’s father had been collecting information on a ship that was filled with millions of pounds of British gold and wrecked, and once he disappeared, John and his friends made it their summer mission to find him and the treasure.

Along the way, however, the four had to deal with very real issues; foster care, drug and alcohol addiction, and the socio-economic issues that had been plaguing them since they were young. The show mixes treasure, adventure, and real-life conflicts with which the teenagers have to struggle. Additionally, a forbidden romance between John B and the wealthy Sarah Cameron develops as the show progresses.

Not only are their social statuses polar opposites, but Sarah’s father and brother prove to be complications in the kids’ hunt for the treasure. The unique plot of the show and the perfect mix between drama and suspense keep thousands hooked.

The Twists and Cliff-Hangers in Outer Banks

Almost every episode of Outer Bank sends with a cliffhanger, and throughout the ten episodes in season one, there are many twists and turns that drop jaws and elicit gasps, not only concerning the treasure hunt and the gold’s whereabouts, but also the fate of the main characters, whose lives are often hanging in the balance by the end of the episode.

One of the worst things about TV shows is when they are too predictable or boring, but Outer Banks certainly isn’t either one of those. Outer Banks is only composed of ten episodes so far, but it takes viewers on a roller coaster ride with all the surprises that take place. The last episode leaves watchers with some closure, but the treasure is still evading all searchers, and the fight will continue in the recently announced second season, which hasn’t yet been filmed, but for which the show has been renewed.

So if you didn’t get a chance to binge this record-breaking, extremely popular Netflix originals, consider watching now, and then get excited about season two!
