India seizes Pakistani boat with 200kg of heroin
$15-$20 million in heroin was seized by Indian officials off the coast of Gujarat this week. It marks the biggest heroin bust in the country’s history.
The boat of Pakistan origins was stopped by coast guard and the Indian Navy. All eight Pakistanis on board were arrested. The final destination of the shipment has not been released.
“The initial investigations on the Indian coastguard ship ‘Sangram’ have led to recovery of 232 packets of narcotics suspected to be heroin,” said Deputy Inspector General S A Gupta from the Narcotics Bureau.
India is close enough to the drug hubs of Pakistan and Afghanistan that their narcotics bureau must constantly patrol the ocean. The poor in the nation are vulnerable to becoming drug mules for distribution around the world.
According to Reuters:
Pakistani and Indian fishermen are frequently arrested by both countries because their Arabian Sea maritime border is poorly defined and fishing boats often lack the technology to know their precise location.
