Samsung promises its first flexible device by the end of 2015

Samsung has already released a few devices with curved displays, but we’re still waiting for the South Korean electronics giant to produce a smartphone that’s actually bendable. According to Ubergizmo, however, that’s exactly what Samsung plans to do next year. Even more exciting is the fact that the device will reportedly be able to fold in half.

“We will secure production capacity of 30,000 to 40,000 flexible displays each month by the end of next year,” said Lee Chang-hoon, vice president of business strategic team, Samsung Display, during Samsung Investor Forum 2014 in New York, as quoted by ZDNet. “There will be no company [except Samsung] that has this great production capacity by 2016.

Whether Samsung’s first flexible device will be a flagship phone or more along the lines of a spinoff, such as the Galaxy Note Edge, remains unclear. However, according to Techno Buffalo, rumors that the upcoming Galaxy S6 and Galaxy Note 5 could both pack flexible displays began popping up earlier this year.

Either way, if we actually do see a flexible Samsung device in 2015, it’ll almost certainly come towards the end of the year, so you shouldn’t expect to see an official announcement from the company at the upcoming CES trade show in Las Vegas. According to Android Headlines, it’s more likely that the device will be announced at IFA 2015 in Berlin.
