Sony unveiled the PlayStation Vue earlier today, a new cloud-based television service that will combines live shows and on-demand content for delivery through Sony’s PlayStation gaming consoles. The Japanese technology giant is the first company to announce an online television package that’s designed to replace a cable subscription entirely, according to Businessweek.
“It looks very similar to your cable and satellite subscription, but they are innovating on the user experience,” said Rebecca Glashow, senior vice president for digital distribution at Discovery Communications, one of Sony’s network partners, as quoted by The New York Times. “It’s more Internet-like in the way that you navigate, search and discover content.”
The company’s current partners on this aggressive assault on the cable-box monopoly include CBS, Discovery, Fox, NBCUniversal, Viacom, and Scripps. While there are some very notable omissions, such as ABC, ESPN, and Disney, Sony has promised that more partners will come in the near future, according to The Verge.
“PlayStation Vue reinvents the traditional viewing experience so your programming effortlessly finds you, enabling you to watch much more of what you want and search a lot less,” said SCE President Andrew House, as quoted by Geek Sided. “PlayStation Vue brings the best of live TV and a robust catalog of the latest content, always keeping you connected to what’s popular, new, and trending.”
