Sundar Pichai now controls most of Google’s product divisions
According to Re/code, a memo sent by Google CEO Larry Page to the company’s employees has revealed that control of the majority of Google’s products is being handed over to Sundar Pichai, the senior vice president of Google who was previously in charge of just the Chrome, Android, and web apps teams.
The list of product divisions that are now being led by Pichai includes search, maps, commerce, research, and Google+, as well as advertisements and infrastructure. The senior executives who were previously tasked with heading up those divisions at Google will now report directly to Pichai instead of Page.
Pichai will retain his current position and will continue reporting to Page, who himself will continue to oversee Google’s business segment, including advertisement sales. He will also remain responsible for YouTube, Google X, Nest, the company’s access and energy division – which includes Google Fiber – and various corporate functions.
This significant reorganization of the company is Page’s attempt to keep Google’s rapid pace of innovation, as well as to help settle the internal disputes that have broken out due to business units overlapping as a result of the company’s expansion. According to a person familiar with the changes, “This plays to the strengths of Sundar and Larry. Sundar is a proven product guy and Larry is a visionary.”
