Porn websites have had a difficult time making their way into the world of mainstream media, despite that fact that a significant portion of the population uses them. NBC rejected Jasmin’s request to run a commercial during this year’s Emmy awards, and CBS rejected Pornhub’s request to run a commercial during the Super Bowl, despite the fact that both of the ads that the companies were going to run were actually pretty tame.
Undeterred, Pornhub has finally exposed themselves to the public with their first major outdoor media campaign, starting with a giant billboard in Times Square. Nuri Gulver, a Turkish copywriter who became Pornhub’s Creative Director after winning a contest to design the best Safe-For-Work advertisement with his “All You Need Is Hand” campaign, designed the ad.
The Pornhub team debuted the ad earlier this week alongside a performance by the Gotham Rock Choir, who sang “All You Need Is Hand.” The 54×48 foot billboard rests above an ad for Stolichnaya vodka on the corner of 47th Street and 7th Avenue, and cost the company around $100,000 to place.
Pornhub is well known for its pun-fueled charity fundraisers, ad campaigns, and porn star interns. However, mainstream advertisers are uncomfortable with associating themselves with an adult entertainment brand, and as such Pornhub has struggled to reach their audience without resorting to publicity stunts and snarky headlines. This new billboard in Times Square is the company’s first shot fired across the bow of media channels that have shut them out.
