Man spots thief who stole from him, throws a trident at his face
Sam Oliver Spence, a man from Hikurangi, New Zealand, has appeared in the High Court at Whangarei after being charged with for reckless disregard for the safety of others as well as wounding another man, Daniel Hill.
Mr. Hill and an accomplice had broken into Mr. Spence’s car that he had traveled to Whale Bay in and had stolen CDs, a mobile phone, and a wallet. A member of the public witnessed the theft take place, took note of the registration number and description of the offenders’ car, and left the description on a note that was placed on the windshield of Mr. Spence’s car.
Later on, Mr. Spence happened to pass by the thieves’ car while driving south of Matapouri. After recognizing it, Mr. Spence blocked the car carrying Mr. Hill from passing. As the car carrying Mr. Hill swerved to avoid capture, Mr. Spencer proceeded to throw a meter-long flounder spear through the open window on the passenger’s side of the car which then embedded itself in Mr. Hill’s head.
Mr. Hill survived the attack but had to stay in rehabilitation at the brain injury unit of Waikato Hospital following emergency surgery for a skull fracture. He said he had been unaware the spear was embedded in his head until his accomplice told him.
