China pushes to maintain shrouded control of Taiwan

Most of the world views Taiwan as an independent state with close ties to China. Of course, that’s not how China sees it, which is why they’re starting to flex their muscle as the China-friendly Nationalist party seems poised for defeat in elections next year. DPP presidential hopeful Tsai Ing-wen is currently positioned to bring the island country back under the rule of the party that doesn’t favor relations with China.

If China’s prospects of keeping their preferred party in power were bad before, they got worst this week with the announcement of popular politician James Soong’s possibly candidacy. A former Nationalist party member, Soong’s entry would split the vote and basically ensure that DPP would gain the power that they had from 2000-2008 when relations with China were at their harshest.

According to Yahoo:

The Nationalists are expected to be thrashed by the DPP in the poll, a result likely to upset China, which claims Taiwan as its own and has never renounced the use of force to bring the island under Beijing’s control.
