It can difficult to follow the social media market in China at times because of how frequently the landscape changes. While Renren was the king of the market just a few years ago it has since been replaced by Weibo which itself has been replaced by WeChat. For outsiders looking in this can be a bit confusing mainly because none of these websites are particularly popular outside of China. Not to mention the fact that in most other countries the social media landscape has more or less remained the same for the last few years with Facebook as the undisputed leader and the same handful of other services battling for the remaining top slots.

China’s social networks aren’t the only thing that keeps changing either, the demographics and platforms that they use are changing as well. With the mobile market in China growing at an insane rate and, by extension, the number of people that are connected to the Internet, social media in the country has been rapidly changing to favor these mobile users which is why the market today doesn’t look anything like it did a year or two ago.
