Volvo Pushing For 4-Cylinder Domination

The Swedish automaker is sticking to its guns, albeit small ones. As they continue to push to be the gas-economical luxury vehicle of choice, they are not just embracing electric vehicles and hybrids. They want all of their vehicles to work from performance 4-cylinder engines.

“Sometimes you have to make radical choices, but we’re not a bit nervous about it,” Volvo Cars Chief Executive Officer Hakan Samuelsson said. “The brand has to stand out a bit more.”

They shouldn’t be nervous at all. Gas economy has been a rising consideration for car buyers for several years now and the luxury segment is one in particular that can use an infusion of cars that get better gas mileage.

“It’s what the customers are wanting,” said Brad Haley at New Jersey Volvo. “We’re seeing a growing number of consumers checking the gas mileage numbers before making a buying decision.”

According to Business Week, recent decisions have helped Volvo to make strides in sales:

Volvo Cars is forecasting sales this year will rise about 5 percent from last year’s 427,840 vehicles, propelled by a jump of more than 20 percent in China, Samuelsson said. After declines in Europe and the U.S. in 2013, deliveries should increase in line with those markets this year.
